Close My Eyes (Remake of "Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou)

Close My Eyes
By: Heath Lafferty

You won’t write me down in history
Of me, there will be no lies
For you put me in the very dirt
When I did close my eyes.

No longer will I upset you
Now you will have no more gloom
‘Cause I’m buried six feet under
In a coffin with no room.

No more moons and no suns
Never more to see the tides
In my covered tomb have I
Closed my eyes.

Now you all have seen me broken
In mortician’s disguise
But I will shed no more teardrops
And I’ll utter no more cries.

Not again will I offend you
You won’t have to fight so hard
‘Cause I lay level to coal mines
Here in Old Man Death’s backyard.

You can’t shoot me with your words
You can’t cut me with your eyes
For you killed me with your hatefulness
So now I’ve closed my eyes.

What did I do to upset you?
Why was it me you despised?
Never will I hear the answer
Everyone’s said their goodbyes.

They will never see your shame
My eyes
From causing me all the pain
My eyes
I’m in the ground, here will I lie
For a few days ago is when I did die.

They’ll see no more nights of terror and fear
My eyes
But now they will see Heaven so clear
My eyes
Enjoying the gifts that Jesus gave
They look around in Glory, for I did die saved.
My eyes
My eyes
My eyes.
